Turkish investor fined shs200m for degrading wetland

Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu of the Makindye Utilities and Wildlife Court has fined a Turkish investor, shs200 million or serving a five year jail term for degrading a wetland in Mukono.

Kerim Ray, the managing director of Yaman International Limited in Mukono pleaded guilty together his employee Eric Avunalo of  degrading Lwajali wetland in Mukono district.

The two illegally dumping murram  on 2.1 acres of wetland despite being allowed to develop o.4 acres.

During sentencing, Magistrate Kamasanyu emphasized the severe impact of wetland destruction on the country, citing increased flooding and other adverse effects.

In addition to the prison term and fine, Ray was also ordered to restore the Lwajali wetland, further underscoring the court's commitment to environmental protection.

Avunalo, who acted under the direction of his employer, received a caution from the court.

Magistrate Kamasanyu acknowledged that Avunalo was following orders and did not play a principal role in the environmental violations.

The offenses were committed on June 30, 2024, at Gongobe village, Seeta Parish, Goma Division in Mukono district.

Under Section 55 Subsection 1 of the NEMA Act, the penalties for such environmental crimes can be as severe as 12 years in prison or fines up to shs600 million .
