MTN Uganda has donated Shs 15 million, bottled water, and 500 reflector jackets to the Lugazi Roman Catholic Diocese.
The donation is intended to support preparations for the upcoming Uganda Martyrs Day celebration at Namugongo, scheduled for June 3, 2025.
It was officially received by the Vicar General of Lugazi Diocese, Monsignor Dr. Richard Kayondo, who expressed the diocese’s gratitude to MTN Uganda.
He acknowledged that multiple organizing committees are already at work and that substantial financial resources are being spent—making MTN’s contribution both timely and welcome.
“Water and reflector jackets are especially critical for foot pilgrims who walk long distances under the scorching sun,” Dr. Kayondo said. “We are hopeful that, thanks to these reflectors, we will see fewer or no accidents, particularly at night.”
He appealed to MTN Uganda to consider providing additional reflector jackets, noting that the Lugazi Diocese expects to receive over 20,000 pilgrims.
Dr. Kayondo also called upon other well-wishers to support the pilgrimage, stating that more funds are still needed to make the event colorful and successful.
Ronald Ddamulira, MTN Uganda’s Regional Business Manager for East and Central regions, highlighted the company’s continued commitment to social responsibility.
“We have contributed Shs 15 million, bottled water, and 500 reflector jackets, which will help improve visibility and reduce the risk of accidents at night,” said Ddamulira.
He added that MTN Uganda has created a MoMo Pay code specifically for the event, enabling people to make contributions easily and conveniently.
“We are committed to supporting this event and will offer our services along all the pilgrimage routes to Namugongo, not just in Lugazi,” he added.
This year, the Lugazi Catholic Diocese has been designated as the sole organizer of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, one of the largest religious events in the country, drawing pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond.
