The initiative aims to drive sustainable economic growth and create opportunities for the local population.
The paramount chief of the Iteso community, Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot, has announced ambitious plans to rejuvenate tourism in the Teso sub-region by 2025.
The initiative aims to drive sustainable economic growth and create opportunities for the local population.
Speaking during his New Year address, Emorimor stressed the importance of collaboration between the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) and the Ministry of Tourism.
“The focus will be on gazetting and developing notable tourism sites that hold the potential to attract international visitors,” he said.
Key attractions identified for development include Nyero Rocks, Sipi Falls, Kachumbala Rock, Pian Upe Wildlife Game Reserve, Teso Culture Centre, and Soroti Museum.
Others are Opiroi Waterfall, Igala Central Forest Reserve, Lake Bisina (known for shoebills), Kopo Hills Forest Reserve, Lake Opeta, Soroti Rock, Kadam Mountain, and Teso’s urban nightlife.
Emorimor urged the local population to actively engage with the ICU in transforming tourism into a vibrant sector capable of significantly boosting the region's economy.
He also called on the government and development partners to invest in these sites to create employment for the youth and generate revenue for social services.
Mr. Joseph Ojatum, the deputy tourism minister, lauded Emorimor’s proactive approach to the tourism industry.
He announced a second tourism symposium slated for July 2025, aimed at attracting potential tourists and investors to the region.
“Tourism begins with our people’s lifestyle, the foods we consume, our culture, and the unique natural features that surround us,” Ojatum said, highlighting the importance of leveraging Teso’s environment for income generation.
In addition to tourism plans, Emorimor and the ICU cabinet are mobilizing funds to construct a cultural palace for the Iteso community.
President Museveni is expected to officiate at the groundbreaking ceremony in the coming weeks, signaling a significant step toward enhancing the region's cultural and economic profile.
With these initiatives, Emorimor envisions a transformed Teso where tourism plays a pivotal role in improving livelihoods, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering economic growth.
