Shaka Steven Gashaijja has clinched the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag for Entebbe Municipality after a hotly contested primary election that saw him secure 4,175 votes.
Gashaijja defeated Scholastica Najjemba Baguma, former chairperson of Division A, who polled 467 votes, and Jovia Namaara Tugume, who received 192.
The primaries, conducted across Entebbe’s Divisions A and B, involved over 50,000 registered NRM voters and were characterised by high competition, sporadic irregularities, and heightened security.
While reports of voter bribery emerged in some areas, the polling station at Comprehensive Secondary School was noted for its calm and transparency. However, the presence of security personnel was visibly tight, with several voters and local councilors reportedly denied access—drawing complaints from affected parties.
Security was also intensified in areas such as Kigungu, where there were allegations of ineligible individuals being allowed to vote.
Entebbe Resident City Commissioner Hakim Kiriggwa said his office intervened in Kigungu but maintained that the election was largely peaceful.
“The process was largely peaceful, and we worked to resolve issues promptly,” Kiriggwa said.
In the Wakiso District parliamentary race, Rose Kilabira, Beth Kayesu, and Namakula Radiyah are vying for the NRM flag in a separate contest.
Gashaijja, who led in most polling stations, hailed his supporters after the victory.
“I am humbled by the overwhelming support from the people of Entebbe. Since I’m through this race, I’m ready to win the general race. I pledge to work tirelessly to serve and uplift our community,” he said.
With a commanding lead, Gashaijja now heads into the general elections as the NRM flagbearer for Entebbe Municipality.
