Police in Masindi are investigating a shooting in which a Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier allegedly gunned down a civilian hawker in the early hours of April 19, 2025.

The incident occurred in Kijura Cell, Masindi Municipality, at around 1:50pm.

Julius Hakiza, the spokesperson for the Albertine region police, said an unidentified man, who was dressed in civilian clothes and armed with an AK-47 rifle, pretended to be drunk before opening fire near Brian’s and Trump Bar and Lodges.

The gunman shot and killed 32-year-old hawker Mugisha and fled the scene.

"The crime scene was visited and documented by the police team, including the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) and canine units, led by SP Pensive Tukasiima, the District Police Commander of Masindi," Hakiza said.

Police recovered 14 cartridges and one live bullet from the scene, all of which have been submitted for ballistic analysis.

Statements were also recorded from witnesses.

Mugisha’s body was taken to Masindi Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Police later arrested Corporal Aggrey Byamugisha, a UPDF soldier attached to Masindi Barracks, who was traced within Kijura town centre.

He is now in custody as investigations continue.
