The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced that Karuma and Ayago Bridges along the Kampala–Gulu highway will be closed for repairs starting Monday, March 24, 2025.
The temporary closure will allow the installation of expansion joints, a critical maintenance effort aimed at preserving the structural integrity of the bridges.
According to Works ministry information officer Allan Ssempebwa, the closure is expected to last at least three weeks
The ministry acknowledged that the move would disrupt travel along the busy highway, a major link between central and northern Uganda.
To mitigate the impact, the ministry confirmed that ferries at Masindi Port have been fully repaired and successfully tested.
These ferries will become operational on the same day as the bridge closure, offering an alternative route for motorists and transporters.
Ssempebwa said ongoing works on Karuma Bridge had temporarily been suspended to allow works on the Masindi ferry that would help with diversion.
With the ferry operational, the ministry urged travellers to adjust their plans accordingly.
"Please plan your journey accordingly! We regret the inconvenience caused," it stated on X.
Motorists have been advised to stay updated on further announcements and use the designated alternative routes to avoid delays.
Karuma Bridge, along the Kampala–Gulu highway at Karuma Falls, was first closed to traffic in May 2024 due to critical structural defects.
The bridge underwent extensive repairs before resuming operations last December.
Now, the Ministry of Works and Transport has scheduled further maintenance, including the installation of expansion joints, to enhance its durability.
