“It was an intelligence-led operation after police getting a tip off that robbers had planned to rob a client of the bank. As they planned to rob the victim, our officers noticed and started the disruptive operation,” Onyango said.
The operation
Onyango said two of the robbers were gunned down near Total along Acacia Mall as the rest of the group fled the scene but were pursued and in the ensuing mele, another two were gunned down near Kasasiro stage along the Old Kira Road.
“Another two were put out of action along Mawanda Road as they fled. Two pangas and motorcycles were recovered from the scenes. The deceased’s bodies have been taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for postmortem examination,” Onyango said.
He said the six have been on police’s watchlist but didn’t divulge more information.
Onyango added that they are expanding their investigations to establish whether the six are linked to panga-wielding gangs that have in the past few months been targeting businessmen moving with cash.
For example, earlier this month, panga-wielding thugs travelling on motorcycles trailed and robbed a mobile money bank agent of over shs30 million in broad day.
Last week, a similar group of thugs armed with pangas trailed a businessman from Kawempe where he had withdrawn shs100 million and cornered him at around Maganjo during traffic jam.
The gang pulled out pangas and smashed the Toyota Harrier windscreens before taking off with the bag containing cash.
Police investigations will also try to establish how these thugs get to know that the victims are travelling with cash at a specific time.
