Incidents of people get electrocuted while hanging clothes on the line might seem isolated but the cases are many

A 21-year-old woman, Zaituni Nakaliiri, lost her life in a tragic accident in Mukudde Village, Nyendo-Ssenyange Ward, Masaka City.

Nakaliiri was electrocuted while hanging clothes at her home when one of the clothes came into contact with an exposed electric wire.

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing incident. "She was hanging clothes near an electric line, and one of them touched a wire.

The area below was wet and slippery, making it even more dangerous. Some of the wires pass directly above the house’s iron sheets, which is very risky,” said Cissy Nalukwago, a neighbor.

Residents blame the tragedy on illegal electricity connections prevalent in the area.

"This is a result of illegal electricity connections," said Willy Jjemba, a local resident.

"Authorities, including UMEME, must take responsibility for failing to inspect and prevent electricity theft."

Mukudde Village Chairperson Godfrey Nduggwa confirmed that this is not the first incident tied to illegal connections. He recalled a similar case in April during the grasshopper season, where another life was lost.

"We need urgent action. Illegal power connections have become a recurring problem in our area," he said.

Police from Nyendo responded to the scene, where they found Nakalinzi’s husband, Muhammad Mbaziira, unconscious from shock. He was rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Twaha Kasirye, the Masaka police spokesperson, urged landlords and residents to adhere to proper electricity installation procedures.

"Illegal connections are widespread here. UMEME must enhance inspections and enforce safety standards to prevent such tragedies," Kasirye said.

Nakalinzi’s body has been taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The building's owner, reportedly a resident of Bukomansimbi District, has not yet been publicly identified.

The incident has reignited calls for stricter oversight of electricity connections in Nyendo, with residents demanding accountability to ensure no more lives are lost.
