UWA Issues Guidelines for Motorists Transiting Through Murchison Falls Park
UWA also urged motorists to consider using other routes, such as the Masindi port ferry or the ferries along the Luwero-Nakasongola-Kafu Rwenkunye route, to ease transit.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has issued new guidelines for motorists passing through Murchison Falls National Park following the temporary closure of Karuma Bridge, which is expected to last for three months.
During this period, vehicles using the alternative route through Tangi and Bugungu gates via Buliisa Town Council will be exempted from paying entry fees.
However, the Kichumbanyobo gate remains exclusive to tourists, and motorists entering through this gate will be charged the standard park entrance fees as per UWA’s tariff.
UWA also urged motorists to consider using other routes, such as the Masindi port ferry or the ferries along the Luwero-Nakasongola-Kafu Rwenkunye route, to ease transit.
Operating Hours and Regulations
The park operates from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Transit visitors are advised to enter the park no later than 6:00 pm to ensure timely exit by 7:00 pm. Any entry beyond these hours is strictly prohibited.
The speed limit within Murchison Falls National Park is set at 40km/h, and UWA emphasized that strict enforcement will be applied.
Motorists caught speeding will face immediate fines of Shs100,000. In the event that a vehicle accidentally kills wildlife, a $500 penalty will be imposed.
In addition, motorists are reminded not to litter within the park, with a UGX 100,000 fine for violators.
Unnecessary stops are not allowed, except for authorized tourist vehicles, in a bid to protect both visitors and wildlife from potential hazards.
Vehicles must remain on the designated Tangi-Bugungu route. Any unauthorized deviations will be treated as illegal entry, with a penalty of $150 per person.
UWA also emphasized that hooting and feeding wildlife are strictly prohibited, as these activities disturb animals and pose safety risks.
Motorists caught hooting will be fined Shs100,000 per offense.
Commitment to Wildlife and Visitor Safety
These guidelines are aimed at safeguarding the park's biodiversity and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.
"UWA remains dedicated to protecting the unique biodiversity of Murchison Falls National Park while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors," the Authority said.
"We call on motorists to comply with these guidelines for the benefit of Uganda’s natural heritage, the safety of travellers, and the convenience of tourists visiting the park."
The temporary measures are expected to minimize disruption and ensure that both wildlife and visitors can safely navigate through this critical period.
