Kasese MPs Petition President Museveni Over Recurring River Nyamwamba Floods.
A group of lawmakers from Kasese district, led by Municipality MP Ferigo Kambale, have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni for the second time, seeking a permanent solution to the persistent flooding of River Nyamwamba.
"We urge the President to allocate special consideration and funding to address this issue once and for all," said MP Kambale. "The people of Kasese have suffered for far too long."
The petition comes after the river burst its banks again last Saturday, leaving hundreds of families displaced, billions of shillings in property damage, and loss of life.
"Since 2011, over 52 lives have been lost due to these floods," MP Kambale noted. "It's unacceptable that we continue to lose lives and property every year."
The MPs propose Special consideration and budget allocation to tackle the issue and desilting the entire 25-kilometer stretch of the river.
However, they expressed concern that despite Parliament approving funds to procure excavators for desilting, the equipment has yet to be acquired.
"It's disappointing that the funds were approved, but the excavators haven't been procured," said MP Kambale. "We need immediate action to mitigate the devastating effects of these recurring floods."
The legislators are pushing for urgent action to protect the lives and livelihoods of the people of Kasese.
"We can't continue to watch as our people suffer," MP Kambale emphasized. "We need a permanent solution, and we need it now."
