The Minister of Internal Affairs Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has highlighted the late Gen. Aronda Nyakairima's significant impact on Uganda’s security.

Otafiire made these remarks during the annual Kampala Defence and Security Expo, which commemorates Gen. Nyakairima’s enduring contributions.

Gen. Nyakairima, who served with distinction, was noted for his leadership in the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS).

Under his tenure, the UPS saw substantial advancements, including a 96.7% increase in its budget, rising from Shs79.623 billion to Shs156.8 billion.

Significant improvements during his leadership included the expansion of prison facilities in Dokolo, Kapchorwa, and Moroto, as well as the construction of 436 staff housing units.

There was also a notable 38.1% increase in staff, enhanced sanitation across 60 prison units, and improved farm production through mechanized agriculture.

"Gen. Aronda’s strategic vision and leadership greatly strengthened the Uganda Prisons Service’s capacity and effectiveness. His contributions are deeply valued and will be remembered," Otafiire said.

Otafiire also highlighted Aronda’s contributions to the Uganda Police and regional security, noting improvements in human resource development, modernization of equipment and logistics, and infrastructural enhancements.

His efforts extended beyond Uganda, contributing to regional peace through cross-border cooperation.

"Aronda’s impact was profound, extending beyond national borders to foster regional stability. His work in modernizing and improving security infrastructure has left a lasting legacy," Otafiire added.

The Kampala Defence and Security Expo, held annually, continues to honor Gen. Nyakairima’s enduring contributions to Uganda’s security landscape.

Gen. Nyakairima, who served as Chief of Defence Forces from 2003 to 2013, died on 12 September 2015 while traveling on official duties from South Korea to Dubai.

Authorities reported that he suffered a heart attack. He was 56 years old.
