Opposition parties warned against reliance on individuals

Politics

Veteran politician Wasswa Zilitwawula has issued a stern warning to opposition political parties, cautioning against their dependence on individuals rather than grassroot structures in the bid to challenge President Museveni's reign.

Zilitwawula asserts that this strategy plays into Museveni's hands, allowing him to exploit divisions within the opposition.

With the countdown to the 2026 presidential election underway, opposition parties find themselves embroiled in internal turmoil, marked by infighting, accusations of betrayal, and disloyalty.

Meanwhile, the ruling NRM maintains momentum, evidenced by its ongoing update of party registers.

Dr. Wasswa Zilitwawula identifies a critical flaw in the opposition's approach, emphasizing their singular focus on President Museveni.

"The mayhem in opposition parties is a direct result of their over-reliance on targeting President Museveni as an individual," he states, highlighting the vulnerability this creates for opposition cohesion.

In light of these challenges, Dr. Zilitwawula advocates for a shift in strategy, urging opposition parties to prioritize grassroots engagement and public ownership.

"Parties must empower the public and build robust structures from the grassroots level," he advised.

As opposition parties grapple with internal divisions and strategic uncertainties, Dr. Zilitwawula's counsel serves as a timely reminder of the need for a cohesive and inclusive approach.

With the 2026 election looming, the opposition's ability to unite, build strong foundations, and engage with voters at the grassroots will be crucial in challenging President Museveni's grip on power
