Mbarara Innovators Develop a Delivery App 'SIBO'

Innovators in Mbarara City have developed a delivery app aimed at addressing both business and social barriers.
The Simple & Instant Buying Online (SIBO) app is emerging as a game-changer in Uganda’s second-largest city.
Mbarara, known for its commerce, trade, and growing middle class, has long lacked a streamlined digital marketplace.
Businesses have struggled with limited customer reach and logistical inefficiencies, but SIBO aims to fill this gap.
Sankara Magezi Byaruhanga, the lead innovator at Kreative Campus Innovation Village in Mbarara, explained that Mbarara is often referred to as “the Land of Milk & Honey” and serves as the economic heartbeat of Western Uganda. “As of 2024, it boasts a population of 264,425 and a GDP of Shs 2.03 trillion ($540.1 million), making it the second-largest city in Uganda after Kampala,” he said.
“Beyond being a business hub, Mbarara is also home to over 20% of Uganda’s refugee population, due to its proximity to Nakivale Refugee Settlement. This dynamic is where SIBO comes in.”
Byaruhanga highlighted several key benefits of SIBO for businesses and consumers.
“For businesses, the app offers expanded market reach. Vendors can now sell online, connecting with thousands of potential customers across Mbarara,” he said.
“The app also boosts sales and visibility by providing businesses with a digital storefront and ensures seamless order and delivery management for timely and organized service.”
For consumers, SIBO offers convenience at their fingertips, allowing them to order groceries, food, electronics, and pharmaceuticals with ease.
Beyond enhancing commerce, SIBO is also addressing social challenges.
“Many young people fear stigma when purchasing reproductive health products like condoms, pads, or PEP at physical stores,” Byaruhanga explained.
“With SIBO’s anonymous ordering feature, users can now access these essential items privately, which contributes to HIV prevention and improved reproductive health in Mbarara.”
Since its release, the app has gained rapid traction, with 173 downloads within the first four days and 29 orders recorded in that time.
Through innovation, SIBO is not only bridging gaps in Mbarara’s business landscape but also promoting social change in the region.
