Rwenzori East Region Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, said Maate took his own life after realising he had impregnated a Senior One student, which had resulted in his family paying nearly Shs3 million to cover up the incident.

A Senior Four candidate who was found dead in a room at the weekend hanged himself, Police in Kasese have confirmed.

Emma Maate, 18, left a suicide note indicating he ending his life after he impregnated a Senior One student.

Maate was due to write his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) papers. The national examinations kicked off today.

The deceased, who was a student at Karambi Secondary School in Karambi Sub-county, attended the briefing of candidates on Friday before taking the tragic decision.

Rwenzori East Region Police spokesperson, SP Nelson Tumushime, said Maate took his own life after realising he had impregnated a Senior One student, which had resulted in his family paying nearly Shs3 million to cover up the incident.

"Our investigations reveal that at approximately 8am [on Saturday], Maate woke up, had breakfast, and then returned to his bedroom where he wrote a suicide note stating, 'I impregnated a Senior One girl' before hanging himself," Tumushime said.

The Deputy Head Teacher of Karambi Secondary School, Samson Kule, added that Maate had been suspended at the beginning of the term due to the pregnancy scandal, although he had attended the briefing of candidates the day before his death.

“We suspended him at the start of the term when we found out he had impregnated a Senior One student. However, we allowed him to come for the exam briefing,” Kule said.

Paddy Muhindo, the chairperson of Karambi Sub-c+ounty, urged parents to maintain open lines of communication with their children to help prevent such tragedies.

“We need to be approachable as parents, allowing our children to feel free to discuss their challenges with us. This can help prevent such unfortunate incidents,” Muhindo advised.

Maate, a resident of Karami Village, Karambi Parish in Karambi Sub-county, was found dead in his room on October 12, a day after attending the school briefing.
