Ssewanyana denied microphone over censure motion
Drama ensued in Makindye West when residents got rowdy and prevented their MP, Allan Ssewanyana, from speaking to them.
Apparently, it is believed the residents' anger stemmed from their legislator's refusal to sign the censure motion against four Parliamentary Commissioners implicated in the controversial sharing of Shs1.7 billion 'service award'.
According to a video clip making rounds on social media, Ssewanyana, clad in army green shorts, sandals and a red jersey with Ronaldo's name on it, appealed to the residents to be allowed to speak, but they seemed uninterested.
As soon as he was handed the microphone, residents loudly demanded that he sit sit down and say nothing.
"Go away, you did not sign ('censure motion')" they can be heard saying.
Ladies and gentlemen, I will go with what the majority decide on if I should talk as an MP or not..," Ssewanyana pleaded with the angry residents but to no avail.
The MC of the day tried to calm down the situation by chanting National Unity Platform (NUP) slogans but in vain, and he was left with no option but to snatch the microphone from Ssewanyana.
The incident happened in Makindye West constituency which the legislator represents.
It should be noted that Ssewanyana, famously known as "Omusajja wa Bwino", is one of the MPs who declined to sign the censure motion against the former Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga and other three backbench commissioners, who shared the controversial service award.
Barely a year into their terms, Mpuuga pocketed Shs500 million while the trio shared Shs400m each in the guise of service award.
The service award has alarmed many Ugandans, sparking a censure motion campaign spearheaded by Lwemiyaga County MP, Theodore Ssekikubo.
However, the campaign hangs in balance as it is still short of 177 signatures required by the law.
The Nile Post has contacted Mr Ssewanyana for a comment but his known telephone contacts were out of reach
