Onyango basks in Champions League glory as Sundowns reclaim African crown ‎

Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango added another continental medal to his glittering career as Mamelodi Sundowns clinched the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League title after a tense 2-1 aggregate victory over Morocco’s AS FAR.

‎Although Onyango, 41, did not feature in the final, remaining an unused substitute in the second leg played at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday night, the veteran shot-stopper was part of the matchday squad that celebrated the South African giants’ second Champions League triumph.

‎Sundowns held AS FAR to a 1-1 draw away from home, a result that followed their narrow 1-0 first-leg win in Pretoria, sealing a 2-1 aggregate success and reaffirming their growing dominance on the continent.

‎The Moroccan side briefly believed they had forced a turnaround when Mohamed Hrimat converted a 40th-minute penalty after a VAR intervention.

However, Sundowns responded just before the break through Teboho Mokoena, whose thunderous effort restored their aggregate advantage.

‎Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams later emerged decisive, saving a second-half penalty from Hrimat after another VAR review, effectively shutting the door on AS FAR’s comeback hopes.

‎For Onyango, the triumph adds to an already remarkable career in African football.

The former Cranes captain, widely regarded as the most decorated player in South African football history, has now collected multiple league and continental honours with Sundowns, including previous CAF Champions League success.

‎Across his decorated career at Denis Onyango and Mamelodi Sundowns, he has won 12 South African Premier Soccer League titles, two CAF Champions League crowns, and an African Football League title, making him one of the most decorated players in South African football history.

‎While he did not take to the field in Rabat, his presence in the squad shows his continued value in a team competing at the highest level of African football.

‎After the victory, Onyango shared an emotional message reflecting on the achievement and the club’s journey through a demanding season.

‎“Waking up an 𝘼𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙞𝙤𝙣 again feels sweeter after a huge win like that last night. It wasn’t easy but we thank the Almighty. I’m so proud of this team, proud of the badge, proud to be Masandawana forever," He wrote on X.

‎“To the Yellow Nation, thank you for riding every high and low with us throughout this 25/26 season. Your passion, loyalty and support meant everything to this team. After 10yrs, the CAF Champions League title returns home - back where it belongs." he added.

‎For Uganda, Onyango’s continued presence at the summit of African club football remains a point of pride, as the veteran goalkeeper extends his legacy among the continent’s elite, even from the bench.
