Can Sekabuza Guide Gomba to a Sixth Masaza Cup Title?

As preparations intensify for the 2026 Buganda Masaza Cup, all 18 counties are working to dethrone reigning champions Buwekula ahead of the highly anticipated tournament.

Among the counties attracting attention is Gomba, a side eager to reclaim its place among the competition’s elite and pursue a record-extending sixth Masaza Cup title.

However, concern recently emerged among supporters after Gomba suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kampala-based Melody Stars in a friendly match played at Kabulasoke PTC.

The result sparked debate among fans, with some questioning whether the current squad has what it takes to challenge for the championship this season. Others expressed fears that the team could even struggle to progress beyond the group stages.

Melody Stars head coach Sulayiman Kibirige Majanjalo added to the pressure after openly criticising Gomba’s performance following the match.

“I requested for this friendly because I wanted to test my players and assess their readiness, but from what I saw, if this is the same team Felix Sekabuza intends to use this season, then it still needs a lot of improvement. They created chances but failed to make proper decisions in the final third. The boys still look weak,” Majanjalo said.

Despite the criticism and growing social media debate, Gomba Lions media officer Ibrahim Bossa remains confident that the county still has what it takes to win the championship under head coach Sekabuza.

Speaking after the friendly, Bossa outlined three major reasons why he believes Gomba can reclaim the Masaza Cup crown.

Gomba’s unmatched Masaza pedigree

Bossa reminded critics that Gomba remain the most successful side in Masaza Cup history.

“People should not forget that Gomba are the record champions in this competition. We have reached 10 finals and won five titles, something no other county has achieved,” Bossa said.

Gomba’s dominance over the years has established the county as one of the tournament’s traditional powerhouses, making them perennial contenders regardless of preseason setbacks.

Sekabuza’s winning experience

Bossa also pointed to Sekabuza’s successful history in the competition, insisting the coach understands what it takes to win titles.

“Some people are saying Sekabuza cannot win back-to-back titles, but they forget his history. In 2014, while working alongside Shafik Bisaso, he guided Gomba to victory against Singo. In 2015, he moved to Singo and won the title again after defeating Buddu,” he explained.

He added that Sekabuza was also part of the technical team that guided Gomba to their most recent championship victory over Buddu alongside Ibrahim Kirya.

“Felix is simply a winner. That is why many coaches respect him. He understands these tournaments and knows how to handle pressure,” Bossa added.

Sekabuza has already proven himself with Gomba

Bossa further reminded supporters that during Sekabuza’s previous stint with Gomba in 2023, he guided the county to the Masaza Cup final against Bulemeezi at Wankulukuku Stadium.

Although Gomba eventually lost the final, Bossa believes the coach already demonstrated his ability to build a competitive side capable of challenging for honours.

“The last time Sekabuza handled Gomba, he took us to the final against Bulemeezi. This time around, we believe he can go all the way. Anyone ruling out Gomba is dreaming,” he said.

With five Masaza Cup titles already in their cabinet, Gomba remain the most decorated side in the competition’s history and will now be aiming to secure a historic sixth championship under Sekabuza’s leadership.
