For the first time in the history of any CAF competition, all three co-hosts—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—have simultaneously advanced to the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, sending a powerful message of unity, ambition, and regional pride across East Africa.
This edition of CHAN is already historic—not only for being the first co-hosted by three countries, but also for the unprecedented collective success of the hosts, perfectly capturing the tournament’s spirit of “Pamoja” (Swahili for “together”).
Kenya made an impressive debut at CHAN. The Harambee Stars topped Group A with 10 points, clinching their spot with a decisive 1‑0 victory over Zambia at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium.
Ryan Ogam’s 75th-minute strike secured the win, putting Kenya above the 2020 champions Morocco and demonstrating that the East Africans were serious contenders.
Tanzania, meanwhile, dominated Group B, also finishing with 10 points from three wins and a draw.
The Taifa Stars’ fluid play and disciplined organization turned Dar es Salaam’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium into one of the tournament’s most vibrant venues, with fans celebrating every goal and victory as a testament to Tanzanian football progress.
Uganda finally overcame its CHAN curse. Failing to progress beyond the group stage in six previous campaigns, the Cranes broke through with a dramatic 3–3 draw against South Africa in Kampala.
A stoppage-time penalty by Rogers Torach sealed enough points for Uganda to top Group C, marking their first-ever knockout-round berth in CHAN history.
The moment was met with euphoric celebrations from home fans, a reminder that perseverance can finally pay off.
This historic achievement transcends football. It symbolizes East African collaboration and shared triumph, reinforcing the region’s potential on the continental stage.
Fans from all three nations will now pack the stadiums for the quarterfinals:
