Tanzania Premier League champions, Young Africans (Yanga SC), are set to receive a staggering Shs948 million in prize money.
Yanga, home to Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho, clinched their fourth consecutive Ligi Kuu Bara title in dominant fashion on Wednesday, defeating bitter rivals Simba SC 2-0 on the final day of the season.
Second-half goals from Pacome Zouzoua in the 67th minute and Clement Mzize in the 82nd minute sealed the championship in style.
Simba SC, who also feature a Ugandan star in Steven Mukwala, settled for second place with 78 points, having also lost the reverse fixture to Yanga earlier in the season.
Yanga’s impressive prize haul of Shs948M ranks among the highest league rewards in East Africa, highlighting the financial muscle and growing commercial strength of Tanzanian football.
In sharp contrast, Vipers SC, despite being crowned Ugandan champions, took home a relatively modest Shs60 million, sparking fresh debate over the funding and prioritization of football in Uganda.
Meanwhile, in Kenya, newly crowned Kenya Premier League champions Kenya Police FC are reportedly set to earn Shs139 million, further widening the financial disparity between Uganda and its regional peers.
The stark difference in prize money has fueled calls especially on social media from Ugandan football stakeholders for greater investment, increased sponsorship, and improved league structures to keep pace with regional standards and retain top talent.
