Former Uganda Cranes captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango has rallied behind Isma Watenga following the latter’s costly errors in Uganda’s 3-1 defeat to Mozambique in a World Cup qualifier played in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.
Watenga endured a difficult match, making two costly mistakes that led to Mozambique’s goals before being substituted at halftime for Nafian Alionzi.
The goalkeeper allowed Mozambique to open the account when he conceded straight from a corner kick. And after his charges rallied to pull back level, he again inexplicably allowed an innoxious low-cross fizzle under his gloves for the hosts to tap in.
In a message shared on social media, Onyango urged Watenga not to dwell on his mistakes, reminding him that even the best goalkeepers in the world have had their fair share of errors.
“Mistakes happen, Isma Watenga. Even the best goalkeepers in the world have made massive errors. The difference? They don’t let those mistakes define them.
“As a goalkeeper, you live under a microscope—I can tell you. One mistake, and all eyes are on you. But listen carefully: The mistake is not what matters. It’s how you RESPOND that defines you,” Onyango posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper encouraged the Golden Arrows goalkeeper to reset mentally and focus on the next challenge.
“Own it. No excuses, no blame—just accept it and move on. You’re human. It happens. Reset your mind. Take a deep breath, exhale the mistake, and focus on the next play. The game isn’t over.”
Watenga went into Thursday’s match in high spirits, having recently played a crucial role in helping Uganda qualify for AFCON 2025.
Despite his errors, he has earned admiration from Cranes fans for his previous solid performances.
The 29-year-old will now look to put the setback behind him as Uganda prepares to face Guinea on Tuesday in another crucial World Cup qualifier.
Mozambique secured victory through a brace from Pepo and a goal from Stanley Ratifo. Uganda played most of the match with 10 men after Dennis Omedi was sent off in the 36th minute following a second yellow card for a late challenge.
Uganda’s lone goal came from Muhammad Shaban in the ninth minute.
The result saw Mozambique climb to 12 points, three ahead of Algeria, who face Botswana on Friday in a must-win encounter. Uganda, meanwhile, remains in third place, level on six points with Botswana and Guinea.
The Cranes will need to finish atop Group G to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
