Kibuli SS champions of UMEA solidarity games
SPORT | In a thrilling display of skill and sportsmanship, Kibuli Secondary School emerged triumphant in the Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) solidarity games 2024 edition, capturing the most trophies.
The tournament, which saw participation from 96 teams representing 38 schools and boasting a total of 1,500 players, showcased the best of talent in various disciplines.
Led by the Prince Hajj Kasimu Nakibinge Kakungulu, the event kicked off with fervour, marking a significant milestone in the sporting calendar of Muslim secondary schools.
Addressing the gathering, Nakibinge emphasised the importance of nurturing young talents to elevate Uganda's presence in the realm of sports.
“As we are aware, UMEA solidarity games are meant to promote natural talent. Secondary is to promote cooperation and understanding in all the participating institutions," he said.
"This year’s edition I think is the biggest so far of which I wish to thank the organisers for a job well-done. I think this should be the range mark here. After that all the UMEA solidarity games should attract a number of this size.”
Masaka Secondary School clinched victory in the boys' football category.
According to their coach Rogers Lwebuga, this year's tournament brought about a unique energy and intensity, setting it apart from previous editions since its inception in 1989.
Reflecting on the significance of the UMEA Sports Championships, Hajj Musa Musoke Mpuungu, the chairman of UMEA sports in southern region and the organiser of this year’s event, urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to invest in youth to the development of Uganda’s sports.
He emphasised the pivotal role played by young athletes in advancing the country's sporting landscape.
The competition featured a diverse range of sports including football, boxing, golf, table tennis, volleyball, handball, and badminton.
While Kibuli Secondary School emerged as the overall champions, other participating schools were acknowledged for their commendable efforts with medals.
As the dust settles on the UMEA Solidarity Games, attention now shifts to the upcoming National USSA Football Championship scheduled to commence on the 27th of this month.
With newfound momentum and determination, teams are gearing up to showcase their talents on the national stage, fuelled by the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship instilled by the UMEA solidarity games.
