Govt announces November completion of Muko Power Station
The substation will have a capacity of 80MW

The substation, which will have a capacity of 80MW, aims to address the power challenges affecting several districts within the Kigezi sub-region.

The State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Sidronius Opolot Okaasai, has announced that the Muko Power Substation will be commissioned by the end of November 2024.

The substation, which will have a capacity of 80MW, aims to address the power challenges affecting several districts within the Kigezi sub-region.

The minister’s announcement comes just a few weeks after a planned protest march to Umeme in Kabale was foiled by police.

The protest, scheduled for 9 August 2024, was intended to hold Umeme accountable for the persistent power outages in Kabale town.

These outages have crippled businesses over the years, leaving residents frustrated and local enterprises bearing the brunt of the blackouts.

During his visit to Kisoro District headquarters, Minister Okaasai emphasized the importance of prioritizing productive ventures that utilize power. He encouraged the community to leverage this new energy source to drive economic growth and development.

“The completion of the Muko Power Substation is a major milestone for our region. We are committed to ensuring that our people have access to reliable and affordable electricity,” Minister Okaasai stated.

The minister is currently on an official visit to various districts within the Kigezi sub-region, including Kabale, Kisoro, Kanungu, Rukiga, Rubanda, and Rukungiri.

Today, he is in Kisoro District, meeting with stakeholders and area leaders. He is accompanied by several officials, including Bufumbira South MP Alex Niyonsaba Seruganda, Bufumbira North MP Kamara John Nizeyimana, Kisoro District Chairperson Abel Bizimana, and various technocrats and councillors.

“We encourage the community to make the most of this new energy source to drive economic growth and development,” Minister Okaasai added.

The completion of the Muko Power Substation is expected to bring significant benefits to the Kigezi sub-region, including increased access to electricity and enhanced opportunities for economic development.

The community eagerly awaits the commissioning of the substation, which is set to take place by the end of this year.
