This initiative aims to meet the rising power demand in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, ensuring a reliable and stable electricity supply for residents and businesses.

“The government is committed to delivering essential services through projects like this, which directly address the challenges of power reliability and stability in Greater Kampala,” Nankabirwa stated during the ceremony.

The project is backed by significant funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has provided a 40-year concessional loan of $125.1 million.

The Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) has also extended its full support for the initiative.

“This project will enhance the transmission system in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, promoting economic growth and improving livelihoods,” Nankabirwa added.

With Uganda possessing a surplus in power generation yet constrained by limited transmission and distribution infrastructure, this project represents a vital step toward meeting the country's energy needs.
