Suspected foreign poachers killed in a crossfire at Kidepo
In a tense confrontation at Kidepo National Park, four suspected South Sudanese poachers were shot dead by security forces on July 19.
The incident occurred in Naseparwae Village, Kawakol Sub-county, Karenga District
According to security authorities, a group of ten armed individuals, identified as Sudanese nationals, crossed the border into Uganda and entered Kidepo National Park.
The poachers managed to kill two buffalos before being confronted by Ugandan security forces. The ensuing firefight resulted in the deaths of four poachers.
"Four poachers were put out of action, and we recovered several weapons including guns, bows, and arrows," Mike Longole, the Karamoja Police spokesperson, said.
The confiscated firearms include thr Bolt carrier 01458 with two rounds of ammunition, weapon with serial number 3930/1 YK0800 with one round of ammunition, firearm 38617/C1M with no rounds of ammunition, and Bolt carrier 6758/BOLT 62912 with no rounds of ammunition.
Additionally, five bows and 10 arrows were recovered from the scene.
"Our officers have been on high alert to prevent illegal activities that threaten the park's biodiversity. We will continue monitoring any act of poaching", Major Isaac Oware, UPDF Third Division information officer, said.
Kidepo Valley National Park, known for its rich wildlife and unique landscapes, has increasingly become a target for poachers.
The security forces' swift response to this latest incursion highlights their commitment to safeguarding Uganda's natural heritage.
As investigations continue, authorities are calling for vigilance and support from both local and international stakeholders to protect the region's wildlife and ensure the safety of those who work tirelessly to preserve it.
