Mbale District Woman MP Miriam Mukhaye has received a boost in her bid for NRM Parliamentary Caucus General Secretary after securing the endorsement of Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus Chairperson Godfrey Wakooli.

The race for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus General Secretary position has gathered momentum after Godfrey Matembo Wakooli, the Chairperson of the Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus, publicly endorsed Miriam Mukhaye for the influential post.

Wakooli’s endorsement makes him one of the first regional caucus leaders to openly declare support in the contest for key leadership positions within the ruling party’s parliamentary structures in the 12th Parliament.

In a message to fellow legislators, Wakooli described Mukhaye as a capable and experienced leader who would strengthen coordination and cohesion within the NRM Parliamentary Caucus.

“Fellow NRM Members of the 12th Parliament, I respectfully request your support and vote for Hon. Miriam Mukhaye, Woman MP for Mbale District, for the position of General Secretary of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus,” Wakooli said.

“Hon. Mukhaye is a committed, experienced, and dedicated leader who will serve our caucus with integrity, unity, and diligence,” he added.

Mukhaye, who represents Mbale District in Parliament, is seeking the General Secretary position, a key office responsible for coordinating caucus activities, facilitating communication among members, and supporting the administration of the ruling party’s parliamentary agenda.

Her campaign has been built around themes of unity, transformation, and prosperity, messaging that aligns closely with the NRM’s broader political agenda as the 12th Parliament settles into its first session.

Political observers say Wakooli’s endorsement could help Mukhaye consolidate support within the Bugisu sub-region and potentially influence voting patterns among MPs aligned to regional caucuses.

Endorsements from organized parliamentary blocs have historically played a significant role in shaping outcomes of internal caucus elections, where consensus-building and regional alliances often prove decisive.

The forthcoming NRM Parliamentary Caucus elections are expected to influence the ruling party’s legislative coordination, policy prioritisation, and engagement between government and backbench legislators over the next parliamentary term.

Supporters of Mukhaye have portrayed her as a unifying figure capable of strengthening internal cohesion within the caucus, although other contenders are also expected to intensify lobbying efforts as consultations continue.

The NRM has not yet released an official timetable for the caucus elections, but discussions among MPs and regional caucuses are already underway as candidates seek to secure support ahead of the vote.
