Former Makerere University Guild President Roy Ssemboga has rejected the findings of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Management Committee (EMC), saying the process of selecting parliamentary flag bearers was flawed and manipulated.
Appearing on the NBS Frontline show, Ssemboga—who has twice failed to secure the party ticket—said his disappointment was not with NUP itself but with the committee charged with overseeing the selection process.
“I am not disappointed by the party but the EMC,” he said.
Ssemboga had sought the Kawempe South parliamentary flag, which instead went to Fred Nyanzi, the elder brother of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi.
He claimed the committee’s decision was influenced by internal pressures.
“Some people arm-twisted the EMC,” he added.
When asked whether he still considered himself a member of NUP, Ssemboga pointed to the party constitution, noting that any member who stands as an independent automatically forfeits their membership.
“The moment I pick nomination forms to run as an independent, I will cease to be a member,” he said.
The NUP selection process has left a bitter taste among several aspirants who failed to secure the party flag, deepening divisions as the party prepares for the 2026 elections.
