Hajj Latif Sebagala, a prominent political figure in Kawempe, has declared his independent candidacy for the Kawempe Division Mayoral race after being denied a National Unity Platform (NUP) nomination.
The announcement, made at a press conference at his Kisaasi home on Sunday, was attended by several disgruntled councilors who were also excluded from the party’s internal selection process.
Sebagala, a former Kawempe North MP, said his long-standing ties to the community and political experience made him a strong candidate, but he described NUP’s nomination process as flawed and lacking transparency.
“Despite the party’s decision, my commitment to serving the people of Kawempe remains unwavering,” he said.
“This independent bid is not a rejection of NUP’s ideals but a demonstration of my determination to serve my community.”
He drew parallels with President Robert Kyagulanyi’s journey to political office, noting that overcoming obstacles is part of public service.
Sebagala accused the nomination process of favoritism and irregularities, though he did not provide specific details.
Several councilors present at the press briefing echoed his concerns and pledged support for his independent campaign.
The group has reportedly sought a meeting with Kawempe Division Mayor Emmanuel Sserunjogi to strategize a united front but was rebuffed.
Mayor Sserunjogi dismissed Sebagala’s claims as “sour grapes,” describing the nomination process as “fair and transparent” and warning that Sebagala’s independent run could fracture party unity and cost NUP crucial votes.
With NUP’s nomination process concluded and the Electoral Commission preparing to register candidates, Sebagala confirmed he will submit his papers in the coming days.
His entry as an independent candidate adds a new dimension to the Kawempe mayoral race, challenging both NUP and other contesting parties.
Observers say Sebagala’s decision could significantly alter the political dynamics in Kawempe ahead of the elections.
