The National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Management Committee (EMC) has pledged to work without breaks until it completes vetting the growing number of aspirants seeking party endorsement ahead of the 2026 elections.
Now on Day Four of the rigorous vetting process at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule, the EMC announced plans to begin screening local government aspirants in Wakiso District starting Saturday, August 2.
The party aims to complete vetting for both Kampala and Wakiso districts by August 7, 2025.
Despite concerns about the pace of the exercise, hundreds of hopefuls continued to line up for their turn, many waiting patiently throughout the day to be vetted.
While some critics have raised doubts over the commission's ability to stay on track, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya dismissed the claims, saying the process is actually progressing faster than expected.
“Our electoral commission is ahead of schedule. Every candidate, regardless of position, must undergo the same process to ensure transparency and credibility,” Rubongoya said.
EMC Deputy Chairperson Ivan Ssempijja reaffirmed the commission's commitment, saying no weekends would be observed until all applications in the central region are reviewed.
“We are not taking any weekend breaks. The demand is high, and we have to deliver,” Ssempijja said, adding that the EMC is working around the clock to ensure Kampala and Wakiso are cleared before the August 7 deadline.
The vetting process, which began earlier this week, is part of the NUP’s effort to tighten internal discipline and ensure qualified candidates represent the party at various elective levels in 2026.
