Mathias Mpuuga has postponed declaring whether he will seek the presidency of the Democratic Front (DF), saying the decision will come after the party’s national conference scheduled for Thursday in Masaka.
The former Leader of the Opposition said while he remains open to vying for the party’s top leadership or presidential flag bearer role, this is not yet the moment to make that call.
“It is not in my space right now,” Mpuuga said, who is also the MP for Nyendo Mukungwe constituency in Masaka.
“But the decision will come after the conference on Thursday.”
The national conference will mark the official launch of the Democratic Front as a political force and will also include the election of its inaugural leadership committee.
Delegates are expected to begin arriving on Wednesday to finalise preparations.
Political analyst Emmanuel Dombo welcomed Mpuuga’s caution, describing it as a mark of political maturity.
He said Mpuuga is “an intelligent leader whose potential has long been recognised by both the Kabaka and the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP).”
The DF is one of the new political formations seeking to reshape Uganda’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2026 general elections.
