Rukiga FDC Chairman Michael Kwarikunda Mbareeba has declared he will contest the 2026 LC5 elections as an independent, citing internal disagreements within the party—marking a dramatic political shift in the Kigezi sub-region.

KABALE — In a significant political development, Rukiga District Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Chairman Michael Kwarikunda Mbareeba has announced that he will contest for the LC5 chairperson seat as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections.

Speaking during a press conference held in Kabale Municipality, Kwarikunda cited growing discontent with the FDC’s current leadership and direction as the primary reason for his decision to part ways with the party ticket.

“I cannot wait for a falling house to fall on me. I am not its initiator, I am not its foundation, and I will not wait for it to collapse on me,” he said, adding, “I am still the FDC chairman for Rukiga District, but when the time comes, I will stand as an independent.”

Kwarikunda, a prominent figure in Rukiga politics known for his strong grassroots presence and dedication to public service, emphasized that although he remains loyal to FDC’s founding principles, he cannot in good conscience continue under its banner.

However, he ruled out joining any other political party, reaffirming his intention to run independently.

He pledged to prioritize the rehabilitation of roads, improvement of the healthcare system, and ensuring access to clean water for all communities in Rukiga if elected.

“Even when I remain loyal to FDC principles, I cannot in good conscience continue to stand on the party ticket,” Kwarikunda reiterated.

He also promised a leadership rooted in transparency, accountability, and increased citizen engagement, saying his goal is to build a more inclusive and responsive local government.

Kwarikunda’s announcement has sent ripples through the political landscape of Rukiga, with many keenly watching how this bold move will shape the district’s political dynamics ahead of 2026.

His independent bid marks a significant moment, both for the FDC in the Kigezi sub-region and for voters who may now view his campaign as a test of individual merit over party loyalty.
