Police in Mubende District have recovered an eight-month-old baby girl and arrested a woman suspected of abducting her from Kibaati Cell.
The suspect, identified as Reginah Namwanje—also known as Namande—was tracked and arrested in Kyato Village, Kassanda District.
According to Martin Kalekyezi, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Mubende, the arrest followed a report made by the child’s mother, Adrine Nyamwiza, who accused her longtime friend Namwanje of taking the baby without permission.
“The mother came here eight days ago, complaining that she had lost her daughter and suspected that her friend Namande had taken the child,” Kalekyezi said.
Police arrested a woman in Kigaanda Sub-county who later led them to Namwanje’s location.
“We used a tracking system. At first, we arrested her friend in Kigaanda, who then directed us to Namande's location. With the help of Kassanda Police, our team eventually arrested her,” Kalekyezi added.
Nyamwiza said she had known Namwanje for four years and had trusted her with the child.
“She used to come home and take my child out. On the day she took Angel, it felt like any other visit. But after two hours, I went to her home and found that she had disappeared,” Nyamwiza told The Nile Post.
She said the days that followed were agonizing.
“I missed the moments with my child. At times, I couldn’t even sleep. But I thank the police for doing the needful and helping me recover my child,” she said.
Namwanje is currently being held at Mubende Central Police Station as investigations continue.
