Celebrations erupted in Tororo Municipality on Friday after Bernard Ochieng, popularly known as “Oben,” was declared unopposed in the race for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) mayoral flag bearer position.
The announcement followed the close of the nomination form-picking window for parliamentary, LCV, district council, and mayoral aspirants.
In stark contrast to the often combative mayoral primaries that have defined Tororo’s political landscape, Ochieng emerged as the sole NRM aspirant, prompting spontaneous street celebrations.
Supporters hailed the development as a vote of confidence in Ochieng’s leadership and a sign of growing political maturity in the municipality.
“This is a historic moment for us,” one supporter shouted amid chants and ululations. “Oben deserves this for the years he has walked with the people.”
Tororo District NRM Registrar Joseph Kadokech confirmed that 88 aspirants had picked nomination forms for LCV councilor positions, but only Bernard Ochieng picked a form for the mayoral seat.

"The exercise has been peaceful and we are set to begin nominations on June 17, 2025," Kadokech said. He also appealed to all candidates to uphold peace during campaigns.
“This is a process to choose leaders, not a boxing match,” he added.
Speaking after the declaration, Ochieng said he was not surprised by the outcome.
“I have been engaging with voters consistently — at community gatherings, during funerals, and in their homes. These interactions have built trust and possibly discouraged other aspirants,” he said.
Ochieng urged his supporters to continue mobilizing ahead of the general elections and expressed optimism that his strong base might carry him through unopposed once again.
Magino Ramadhan, a political analyst based in Tororo, said the development reflects Ochieng’s deep-rooted popularity.
“Ochieng’s humility and consistent grassroots engagement have earned him widespread trust,” Ramadhan said. “His appeal presents a real challenge to any would-be contender in 2026.”
As the NRM enters the nomination phase, attention now turns to how the broader political contest will shape up.
But for now, Bernard Ochieng and his supporters are basking in an early and emphatic show of support.
