Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Katugugu Muhwezi has formally secured the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party nomination to contest for Rujumbura County in the 2026 general elections, cementing his place as the ruling party’s flag bearer.

The nomination, confirmed on Friday, comes days after the veteran politician and former Minister of Security announced that this would be his last term in active elective politics.

Speaking shortly after receiving his nomination certificate, Muhwezi thanked his constituents for their continued trust and pledged to remain committed to service and transformation.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been nominated as the NRM flag bearer for Rujumbura County,” he said.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people who have placed their confidence in me. Your trust is not taken lightly.”

Muhwezi stressed that his candidacy is rooted not in rhetoric but in tangible action aimed at transforming communities.

“Let me be clear: I did not enter this race to trade words in the theatre of politics or engage in spectacle,” he said.

“I came to continue the work — the real, tangible work that transforms lives and uplifts communities. In lieu of division, I choose the quiet strength of service, the relentless pursuit of development, and the discipline of delivery.”

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the NRM’s mission, noting that his political journey is driven by a commitment to national progress rather than personal ambition.

“I align myself fully with the mission of the National Resistance Movement — a mission grounded in peace, stability, transformation, and prosperity for all Ugandans.

That mission is bigger than personalities; it is bigger than politics. My purpose is not to outtalk my opponents, but to outwork them.”

Outlining his priorities for the next term, Muhwezi pointed to improved education, support for agriculture, youth empowerment, and responsive leadership as key pillars of his agenda.

“I envision a Rujumbura where our children study in well-equipped schools, where farmers have access to better markets and technologies, where our youth become job creators, and where every citizen feels the impact of visionary leadership,” he said.

Muhwezi also voiced his ambition to contribute to Uganda’s national transformation, pledging to play his part in the country’s journey toward middle-income status.

“Nationally, I hope to serve as part of the generation of leaders that moves Uganda from a developing country to a modern economy, firmly rooted in the values of patriotism, hard work, and unity.”

He concluded with a call for unity across the political spectrum.

“I invite all well-meaning Ugandans, regardless of political colour, to join hands and focus on what truly matters — our shared progress,” he said.

“Today marks not just a nomination, but a commitment: to serve, to lead, and to deliver.”
