Charles Kabwama, the Deputy Mayor of Entebbe Municipal Council, has announced his withdrawal from the forthcoming local government elections, in a move that has surprised political watchers and stirred debate in Entebbe.

Kabwama confirmed the decision during an interview, saying: “My young brother and the entire public, it’s true, I made that decision myself. However, a lot behind the scenes will be unveiled at a later stage. But not very far, I will bounce back to the race.”

Though he offered no detailed explanation, the deputy mayor’s statement hinted at internal developments yet to be made public.

He also assured supporters that his exit is temporary.

Kabwama, who contested the 2021 elections under the National Unity Platform (NUP) but lost, was later appointed Deputy Mayor under Mayor Fabrice Rulinda’s administration.

Since then, he has played a key role in local governance, especially in infrastructure development and public service delivery.

Political activist Gracious Mugabi described Kabwama as “one of the most outstanding leaders we have in Entebbe,” adding that his withdrawal signals deeper issues.

“There could be serious reasons why he has opted out, but let’s wait for him to tell us,” Mugabi said.

Analysts say Kabwama’s decision is likely to alter the political dynamics in Entebbe, creating space for new contenders and potentially shifting the balance of power in the municipal council.

During his tenure, Kabwama gained praise for community engagement and attempts to streamline service delivery, though he also attracted criticism from sections of the opposition for aligning with an NRM-led leadership.

His political future remains uncertain, but his promise to “bounce back” has kept his supporters hopeful and opponents cautious.

As Entebbe prepares for what is expected to be a highly contested race, Kabwama’s withdrawal is a reminder of the strategic maneuvers that often define Ugandan local politics. For now, all eyes remain on what the Deputy Mayor will reveal in the coming weeks.
