Tension is brewing in Moroto District following the recently concluded NRM party structure elections.
While the process was largely peaceful, controversy has erupted over the hotly contested position of District Chairperson.
John Logwe was declared the new NRM Moroto District Chairperson after securing 202 votes, defeating his closest rival, John Robert Adupa, who garnered 174 votes.
However, Adupa has rejected the results, alleging widespread bribery and political interference.
“There was open bribery at polling stations. People were paid to vote a certain way. This is not what the NRM stands for, and I am going to petition,” Adupa said.
In his victory remarks, Logwe called for unity and urged his opponents to accept the outcome.
“This was a democratic process, and I thank the people of Moroto for trusting me. I call on my brother Adupa and others to come together so we can build the party,” he said.
The elections, part of the nationwide NRM structure polls, witnessed a high voter turnout.
While some candidates ran unopposed, others contested under the party’s lining-up voting system. Voting began as early as 8am at most polling stations.
Stephane Adupa, the newly elected NRM District Vice Chairperson, acknowledged some irregularities but emphasized resolving disputes through the party's internal mechanisms.
“There were challenges, yes, but we believe in our structures. If there are issues, they must be addressed properly through petitions,” he said.
Some voters expressed deep dissatisfaction with the process, accusing certain Members of Parliament of influencing the election in favor of specific candidates.
“We saw money changing hands right before our eyes. This was not a fair election,” said Mark Meri Apus, a voter.
“If this is how elections are run, I may not vote again. It’s discouraging,” added Agnes Akello.
Supporters of Adupa have threatened to leave the party if their grievances are not addressed. However, supporters of Logwe maintain that the election was free and fair.
“The whole process was clear. There was no rigging. Adupa’s camp needs to accept the results,” said Esther Nakiru.
As Adupa prepares to formally petition the party’s top leadership, the NRM secretariat has yet to issue an official comment on the allegations.
John Robert Adupa currently serves as Chairman of Lotisan Sub-county, while John Logwe is the Chairperson of RUCODET, a community-based organization that advocates for land and mining rights in Moroto.
