After five years of operating without a district chairperson, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Mubende has a new face at the helm—and a bold promise of a fresh home.
Thomas Ayinebyona, elected unopposed as the new district chairperson, has vowed to construct a distinctive NRM office to replace the rented premises the party has long relied on.
"I want to thank the Almighty for enabling me to go through this exercise," Ayinebyona said shortly after being declared winner earlier today.
"We have spent five years without a district chairperson because Honourable Namugwanya left the district after the 2021 elections, and today I have been entrusted with the office."
Ayinebyona’s reference to Benny Bugembe Naloongo—also known as Namugwanya—highlighted the leadership gap that has prevailed since she relocated following her parliamentary defeat.
Her departure left the Mubende District Executive Committee without a political head until now.
In addition to his pledge for a permanent party home, Ayinebyona said he will focus on rekindling support for the NRM in Mubende, with a clear eye on the 2026 general elections.
"I will ensure that NRM regains its support, working together with the team at the District Executive Committee," he declared.
He also addressed the thorny issue of internal divisions among party leaders in the district.
"I will work to unite our leaders, who for a long time have been engaged in internal conflicts," he said, adding that unity will be critical in strengthening the party's position.
The newly elected district leaders include Patrick Abaho as Vice Chairperson, Patience Namuddu as District Youth Spokesperson, Tatu Nabulya Nayiga as District Treasurer, and Twaha Mukomazi as District Publicity Secretary.
Their election marks a new chapter for the ruling party in Mubende, one that Ayinebyona hopes will begin with a foundation both figurative and literal—a unique NRM office built from the ground up.
