Peter Lonya has beaten Moses Bildad Adome in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) election re-runs for the Kotido District party chairperson position.
The tightly contested race saw Lonya secure 79 votes, narrowly edging out Adome, who garnered 74 votes.
The initial election results were nullified by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, following serious allegations of malpractice, including reports of voter kidnapping.
Social media was later awash with videos of men claiming their wives were being abducted and forced to vote for a rival candidate.
The rerun, which attracted widespread attention in the Karamoja sub-region, particularly focused on the district chairmanship—the most hotly contested position in the party’s local structure.
Speaking after his win, Peter Lonya promised to unify the party and work toward strengthening the NRM base in Kotido.
"This victory is not just mine. It belongs to the people of Kotido. I call upon my brother Adome and all supporters to join hands as we move forward," he said.
The NRM Electoral Commission has commended the peaceful conduct of the rerun and urged all members to uphold the party’s values of fairness and internal democracy.
