NUP Adjusts Kawempe North Campaign Route Following Museveni Security Restrictions
Bobi Wine says the NRM are looking for scapegoats

NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi announced that the party’s Kawempe North by-election campaign would shift to Komamboga, following security restrictions in Bwaise 1 due to President Museveni's visit. This change comes after violent clashes between NUP supporters and security forces earlier in the campaign.

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi has announced that the party's Kawempe North by-election campaign will now be held in Komamboga, not Bwaise 1, due to security restrictions imposed by authorities.

The change follows the planned visit of President Museveni, who is set to hold a rally in the area to canvass votes for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer, Faridah Nambi, ahead of Thursday's elections.

Kyagulanyi shared the update on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), explaining that security forces had blocked their access to Bwaise 1, citing it as the president’s scheduled route.

To avoid any potential violence, he confirmed the campaign would proceed in Komamboga, where their candidate, Nalukoola, had already held a rally.

"They have said we can only meet in Komamboga where our candidate Nalukoola already campaigned," he said.

"In order not to give them the excuse of beating, abducting or killing our people, we are going back to Komamboga grounds.

The decision comes after recent violent clashes between NUP supporters and the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT), raising concerns about election violence in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections.

Despite the early campaign unrest, violence had ceased following a meeting between the Electoral Commission and security forces last week.

The Kawempe North by-election, triggered by the death of Muhammad Segirinya, will see ten candidates competing in the polls on Thursday.
