The leadership of National Unity Platform (NUP) in Makindye division has condemned the alleged kidnapping of their party mobilizer Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, who was taken from his vehicle on Monday in the evening
The incident occurred near Mulago on Monday.
At a press conference held in Kansanga, NUP officials expressed their outrage over the abduction, calling the action an illegal act.
Charles Luba, the Speaker for Makindye Division, led the press conference, denouncing the government’s actions as a blatant violation of human rights.
"The arrest of our leader is an illegal act, and it violates his rights. This is an attempt to suppress us and weaken our movement," said Luba.
Party officials stated that Nyanzi was forcibly removed from his car and was taken in a drone, sparking concerns about government efforts to silence political opposition ahead of the 2026 elections.
The alleged abduction has fueled growing tensions within the party, which has long accused the government of using intimidation tactics against its leaders.
NUP leaders are also calling for the release of other political prisoners, including prominent opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, who was not present at the conference recently issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate release of Nyanzi and other political detainees.
He warned that failure to comply will result in mass protests organized by the party.
Luba emphasised the party’s commitment to continue fighting for the release of political prisoners despite the looming threats from the government.
As the country braces for the 2026 elections, the political landscape remains tense, with both the ruling government and opposition parties preparing for a heated battle for power.
