Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearer for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, has promised to be a steadfast and unshakeable voice for his constituency.

In a speech following his endorsement by NUP, Nalukoola vowed to stand firm against what he described as the “wrath” of President Museveni’s government, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to representing the interests of the people of Kawempe North.

Upon receiving the NUP ticket, Nalukoola framed his candidacy as both a challenge and an opportunity.

He underscored his dedication to serving not only his constituents but also Ugandans facing political and economic struggles nationwide.

“Kawempe North is getting a voice that will never be silenced. I will stand firm for the people of Kawempe North and the people of Uganda,” Nalukoola declared, clearly signaling his determination.

A lawyer by profession, Nalukoola called for unity among his supporters, stressing that collective strength would be key to their success in the by-election.

"Comrades, count on me as much as I count on you. We have the strength, and we can be victorious at the end of the tunnel," he told a rousing crowd.

He also paid tribute to the late Muhammad Ssegirinya, who had represented Kawempe North for NUP in the 2021 general election, securing over 41,000 votes and establishing the constituency as a key opposition stronghold.

“This is a trial because, as a unified force, we must ensure that NUP retains this seat,” Nalukoola said, calling on his party’s supporters to build on the electoral gains made in the previous election.

The NUP official endorsement of Nalukoola came on Tuesday, following a competitive internal race that saw him overcome nine other aspirants, including Muhammad Lussa Luwemba, a former aide to Ssegirinya.

Reports suggest that Luwemba sought divine intervention and even changed his name and religion in an effort to secure the NUP ticket.

The seat became vacant after the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9, a loss that has created a pivotal moment in the party’s push to retain its influence in Kawempe North.

The by-election is scheduled for March 13, with NUP expected to maintain its hold on the constituency, given its strong position following the late Ssegirinya’s tenure.
