Kivumbi Pledges to Strengthen Youth Leadership in NUP
Mr Kivumbi gives his maiden remarks as NUP Vice-President for Buganda

Muwanga Kivumbi, the newly appointed Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for Buganda Region, has vowed to reinvigorate the party’s grassroots movement and empower its youth leadership in his maiden address.

Mr Kivumbi, who serves as the Butambala County MP, takes over from Mathias Mpuuga, who was recently dismissed from the role amid controversy.

“I am deeply honored by this appointment and ready to support our president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, in leading this country,” Kivumbi said, emphasising his commitment to advancing the party’s vision and priorities.

In a pointed message, Kivumbi urged party members to focus on the future rather than dwell on past disputes, appearing to address the fallout with his predecessor.

“Forget those stuck and move on,” he declared, adding, “A river runs continuously, leaving stagnant waters in the swamps.”

A central theme of Kivumbi’s address was the mentorship and promotion of young leaders within NUP, whom he referred to as the party’s “foot soldiers.”

He stressed the importance of building a pipeline of vibrant, youthful leaders capable of sustaining NUP’s momentum.

“One of my main jobs is to mentor the young people. Where we had Ssegirinya, we must have his replacement,” Kivumbi stated, highlighting his resolve to ensure continuity and vitality within the party.

Kivumbi’s appointment follows a contentious period for the party, with Mpuuga’s dismissal linked to his alleged involvement in a Shs500 million service award scandal.

Despite being asked to step down voluntarily, Mpuuga refused, leading to his suspension from the role.

He maintained his innocence and later justified the award that was controversial legalised by a court ruling following a petition by a private citizen at a time Mpuuga and his group face censure.

As Kivumbi takes on this key leadership role, he is tasked with uniting the party and strengthening its grassroots structures ahead of Uganda’s forthcoming political season.
