Rwanda has pioneered diaspora voting, allowing its citizens living abroad to participate in elections since 2010. This innovative approach has yielded impressive results, increasing voter turnout and fostering a sense of inclusivity among Rwandans worldwide. According to the Rwanda Electoral Commission, in 2017, over 40,000 Rwandans in the diaspora registered to vote in the presidential election, with 30,000 casting ballots. The impact this has on Rwanda goes beyond the rights of the people to include the trust the people have in the nation. This initiative allows these people to invest in their land without hesitation since they would have cast a vote of confidence.

Now, what can other countries, especially those who are part of the East African Community, draw from Rwanda? President Paul Kagame managed to secure 99% of the overall vote with help from the diaspora voters, hence it is clear that the impact is there. Experts have defined it as a model for Africa, and Dr. Nicole Ameline, a political scientist, says, "The success of Rwanda's diaspora voting system is a testament to the country's dedication to democratic development and citizen engagement."

This question is left lingering because some African leaders are still hesitant to adopt similar models. They fear that logistical challenges, security concerns, and the potential for electoral fraud might outweigh the benefits. However, Rwanda's successful implementation of diaspora voting demonstrates that these issues can be managed with proper planning, transparency, and the use of technology.

Over the past few years, a number of Africans have migrated to other continents in search of better working and living conditions. Some left with the hope that one day things would change in their homelands and they would return. Part of the desired change is a change of leadership which is part of their constitutional right, to decide who their leader will be regardless of their geographical location. Up-to-date statistics confirm that 12 out of the 54 African countries have this voting system so what of the majority?

Rwanda's diaspora voting model is a pioneering initiative that other countries can learn from. By enabling citizens abroad to vote, nations can enhance democratic participation, strengthen national unity, and bolster the trust of their diaspora communities. We firmly believe that an engaged population is easy to work with.
