Avayo Yoid, a 26-year-old teacher at Yenga Primary School in Obongi district, has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl who had recently completed her exams from the same school.
The arrest was ordered by Obongi Resident District Commissioner Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka after the teenager's father filed a complaint.
After initially escaping from police, he was rearrested following a manhunt. Investigations are underway, and a defilement case (SD Ref 09/10/11/2024) has been opened.
"Yoid attempted to bribe the victim's father to resolve the matter out of court, but the father refused the offer" Mpimbaza said.
Mpimbaza praised the father for reporting the incident instead of accepting the bribe and assured the victim's relatives that Yoid will face court action.
Obongi district leaders said defilement cases in the area remain a significant concern. Despite various legal measures and community efforts, the district has seen frequent reports of such cases, often driven by complex social and economic issues.
They said tackling defilement in the district requires a multifaceted approach, involving legal, social, and economic interventions.
Increased community awareness, accessible legal resources, and stronger enforcement of laws are critical to reducing the number of cases and ensuring justice for victims.
