Former MP Mubarak Munyagwa has cautioned the National Unity Platform (NUP) against underestimating Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba in the upcoming Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.
Luwemba, who recently lost the NUP candidacy to Elias Nalukoola, this month, chose to run as an independent candidate in the by-election.
Speaking on Sanyuka Television, Munyagwa acknowledged that while NUP may have some advantages in the election, Luwemba poses a significant threat that should not be overlooked.
"NUP should not take underestimate Luwemba, even though it has an advantage if it plays its cards right. They (NUP) need to approach this election with defiance to challenge NRM effectively," he stated.
Munyagwa also urged opposition voters to engage actively in the by-election to secure a win, noting, "One of our main issues is that our opposition allies often do not participate in by-elections."
According to the Electoral Commission's preliminary schedule, the by-election is set for March 13.
The contest is anticipated to be intense, with several independent candidates and opposition contenders vying against the NRM's candidate, Ms. Faridah Nambi.
The Kawempe North MP seat became vacant in January following the passing of Muhammad Ssegirinya.
