Police has once against halted all National Unity Platform rallies going forward.
In a Friday evening statement, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said the law enforcement body had decided to stop the rallies after a deadly accident at Maya along the Kampala- Masaka Highway.
“As the government agency mandated to protect life and property, keep law and order, the police management has decided to halt any further consultative activities of NUP as a party with immediate effect until this matter is conclusively investigated and resolved,” Enanga said.
A Friday morning accident involving two vehicles and three motorcycles led to the death of three people including two boda boda riders and a passenger.
Police had earlier said the accident happened when a Toyota Hiace which was part of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi’s procession to Masaka knocked a Toyota Noah which in turn rammed into the three motorcycles.
Two people died on the spot while the third succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital for treatment.
According to police , whereas in the meeting with the National Unity Platform leaders, it was agreed to maintain discipline before, during and after their mobilization rallies, this was not the case.
They also accused NUP of blocking roads during their processions.
“NUP have disregarded the agreed position and continue to act with impunity as demonstrated in today’s unfortunate incident at Maya.”
Enanga added, “We appeal to the public to remain vigilant, observe law and order. Whoever acts contrary to public order and safety shall be held accountable under the laws of Uganda. The safety of Ugandans will always remain our priority.”
The development comes on the backdrop of Kyagulanyi's rally in Masaka in which he made a statement, especially against former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, whose supporters said the NUP leader wouldn't be allowed to step foot in their backyard.
