In a dramatic turn of events during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) district party primaries, a section of youth supporters in Wakiso District have taken a stand against what they deem electoral irregularities, resulting in a complete boycott of the voting exercise.
Led by influential youth leader Henry Luzinda , the protest has sparked significant debate about the legitimacy of the electoral process and the qualifications of candidates vying for the position of NRM District Youth Chairperson.
The atmosphere was charged as hundreds of youth supporters gathered at the designated polling stations, only to find themselves embroiled in accusations and allegations of misconduct.
At the heart of the controversy is the candidature of Kajubi Henry, who is challenging incumbent Luzinda for the esteemed position.
Accusations have surfaced suggesting that Kajubi does not meet fundamental eligibility criteria, as stipulated by the party's electoral guidelines.
Speaking on behalf of the boycotting youths Luzinda, stated that Henry Kajubi is not a resident of Wakiso District, which is a crucial requirement for all candidates seeking to assert leadership within the local party structure.
Luzinda also pointed to Kajubi's reported age of 45, as indicated on his identification documents, arguing that this disqualifies him from participating in youth elections, which typically cater to younger aspirants.
"Youth leadership is about representing those who are truly part of this demographic," Luzinda asserted passionately during an impromptu press briefing following the boycotts.
"How can we stand idly by while someone who clearly does not fit this profile tries to wrestle control from the voices that matter?"
This sentiment echoes a growing trend among the youth in Wakiso District, who are advocating for genuine representation and leadership that resonates with their experiences and challenges as young people in Uganda.
As the voting process commenced, tensions quickly escalated. Youth supporters, initially hopeful about the primaries, expressed their disappointment and frustration with the electoral agents, whom they accused of facilitating the candidacy of Kajubi despite the alleged disqualifications.
The charged atmosphere soon led to a decision among the youths to boycott the elections entirely, marching away from polling stations in protest.
The discontent spread like wildfire through social media, with supporters using various platforms to express their dissatisfaction and frustrations.
Videos and pictures of the march were shared widely, garnering sympathy and support from other NRM youth branches across the country.
"The integrity of our elections is paramount," said a young supporter who wished to remain anonymous. "If we allow this kind of injustice to happen now, what will happen when the real elections come around? We need to take a stand."
Following the boycott, Luzinda and his cohorts formally petitioned the NRM Electoral Commission to intervene in the matter.
The petition outlines their grievances, reiterating the claims against Kajubi's eligibility and demanding immediate action to ensure that the electoral process remains fair, transparent, and representative of the youth.
"We have taken this necessary step not just for ourselves, but for the future of our constituency," Luzinda stated.
"We cannot allow outside influences to dictate the narrative of our leadership. We want the NRM to uphold its values and principles."
The petition signifies not just a challenge to Kajubi's candidacy but also highlights broader issues within the party involving youth leadership and representation.
Citing procedural irregularities and a lack of transparency, the youths are calling for reforms to restore confidence in the electoral process.
In the wake of the turmoil, Kajubi has remained resolute.
Speaking to Nile Post, he expressed his confidence in his qualifications and readiness to defend himself against the allegations made by Luzinda and his supporters.
"I have every right to stand as a candidate for the youth chairperson position in Wakiso," Kajubi declared.
"I meet all the necessary qualifications that the party requires, and I am prepared to prove it, even if it leads to legal action."
Kajubi further emphasized the need for unity within the party, urging supporters to focus on policies and the visions they wish to implement rather than getting bogged down by personal disputes.
"I want to work for and represent the youth of Wakiso," he affirmed. "My experience can bring valuable perspectives that serve our aims and goals."
The events in Wakiso District are reflective of a larger struggle within Uganda's political landscape, particularly regarding the role of youth in governance and party affairs.
