Kampala Central Division Mayor , Uhuru Salim been re-elected as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairman for Kampala District, securing his second term in the position without facing any challenger.
The election, held on Friday at the Nakasero Primary School playgrounds, was part of the NRM’s ongoing internal structure polls being conducted across the country as the ruling party gears up for the 2026 general elections.
Uhuru’s unopposed re-election underscores his growing influence within the party’s urban structures, particularly in a city where the NRM has struggled to maintain political footing in recent years.
His leadership in Kampala is viewed by many within the party as a stabilising force in a region largely dominated by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP).
During the 2021 general elections, Uhuru stood out as the only NRM politician to win a mayoral seat in the Kampala metropolitan area, taking the helm of Kampala Central Division at a time when the wave of opposition support largely driven by NUP swept through the city.
His ability to hold ground in the capital has since positioned him as a key figure in the party’s efforts to rebuild and strategise in urban constituencies ahead of the next national vote.
Addressing NRM delegates and party supporters after his election, Uhuru thanked the Kampala district leadership for entrusting him with another term and pledged to continue strengthening party structures and mobilisation efforts at the grassroots level.
“Our focus as NRM leaders in Kampala is to reorganise and reconnect with the people. We must listen, engage, and work with communities to regain the trust and support of urban voters,” he said.
Party officials at the district level hailed Uhuru’s leadership style, describing him as a pragmatic leader with a strong sense of organisation and loyalty to the party’s vision.
The NRM’s internal elections, which span across village, parish, sub-county, and district levels, are a key component of the party’s roadmap to 2026.
They are intended to rejuvenate its grassroots base, vet potential flag bearers early, and address internal disagreements that have often led to independent candidates splitting the vote.
Political observers have noted that Uhuru’s continued presence in the NRM’s Kampala leadership could be critical for the party’s performance in the next elections.
With the opposition continuing to command strong urban support, the NRM is expected to lean on politically resilient figures like Uhuru to reverse the trend.
