The officials from the National Identification and Registration Authority on Monday appeared before the Parliamentary committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and States Enterprises to respond to queries raised in the Auditor general's report for the financial year 2022/2023.
The committee started by tasking the officials on why only shs7.04 billion was collected as Non tax Revenue against the shs15 billion target.
However, to the officials, the failure to collect the shs15 billion none tax revenue was as a result of the failure to commence the alien registration exercise to which they had expected to raise 7.96 billion shillings.
The officials were also tasked on the increase in case of of National Identity cards where two or more people share the same National Identification number.
" We have got reports that some people own the same NIN number and this has increased fraud in the country,"MP Allan Mayanja of Nakaseke Central said.
"Some people usually photocopy other people's IDs and they make forgeries of them using the same NIN but we have started prosecuting some of the culprits as we wait for the new system that will make it hard to forge," NIRA ED rosemary Kisembo responded
The issue of the circumstances under which NIRA procured the security printing companies generated a serious debate in the committee forcing the chairperson to suspend the meeting until when the necessary documents have been provided.
"You are required to bring those documents here at Parliament before the close of this week and we shall expect you to appear before the committee on Monday next week at exactly 10am," COSASE chairperson, Medard Ssegoona directed.
