The Electrical controls and Switch Gear Company Ltd has revealed that ignorance among Ugandans is the major bottleneck to adopting the Buy Uganda Build Uganda initiative.

Popularly known by its acronym BUBU, the Buy Uganda Build Uganda is a campaign started by the government to promote local manufacturing industry by encouraging consumption of locally-made goods and services.

According to the managing director at Electrical Controls and Switch Gear Company, James Kalibala, the majority of Ugandans need sensitisation about the importance of supporting locally manufactured products that help in boosting the economy.

With the increased urban power demand for industries and commercial buildings and the demand created by the government by rural electrification, this has provided room for young and local manufacturing companies to thrive.

Trading in manufacturing transformers and other products, the company has been in the electrical controls business for over a decade has revealed ignorance among Ugandans as the major bottleneck to adopting the Buy Uganda Build Uganda initiative.

While there is minimum uptake of supporting locally manufactured, Kalibala says over 150 transformers are supplied monthly while some are exported attributing this to the annual audits that help them meet the market demands.

“We need government to do thorough sensitization of Ugandans so people should know the importance of supporting locally manufacturing industries” Kalibala said.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, over reliance on imported products crippled the manufacturing sector, especially during the pandemic where the global supply chains were cut off which triggered and revealed the importance of Buy Uganda Build Uganda.
