US President Donald Trump has defended a controversial AI-generated image he shared on social media, saying he believed it depicted him as a doctor, not as a representation of Jesus Christ.
The image, which was posted on Truth Social before being deleted, sparked widespread backlash globally, with critics describing it as offensive and blasphemous.
In a press briefing at the White House on Monday, Trump acknowledged posting the image but rejected claims that it portrayed him as a religious figure.
“It wasn't a depiction. I did post it and I thought it was me as a doctor… I thought it had to do with the Red Cross, which we support. Only the fake news could come up with that,” he said.
The controversy drew condemnation from several groups, including the Knights Templar Order, which called for the immediate removal of what it described as a “blasphemous” image and demanded a public apology.
“We are deeply offended by this… and ask for a public apology to the Christian brethren,” the group said, citing biblical scripture to reinforce its position.
Criticism also came from Marjorie Taylor Greene, a longtime Trump ally, who described the post as deeply troubling.
“On Orthodox Easter, President Trump… posted this picture of himself as if he is replacing Jesus,” she said, adding that she “completely denounces” the action.
The controversy unfolded alongside escalating geopolitical tensions, as Trump addressed reporters on a range of issues, including a newly imposed US naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime activity.
He said the blockade was aimed at stopping Iran from “blackmailing the world” and claimed that Iranian leaders were seeking a deal.
“Right now, there’s no fighting… we have a blockade, they’re doing no business,” Trump said, adding that the situation was under control.
Trump also declined to apologise for earlier remarks directed at Pope Leo, whom he criticised after the pontiff spoke out against US threats toward Iran.
“I have nothing to apologise for — he’s wrong,” Trump said.
The developments have drawn global attention, blending controversy over religious imagery with rising geopolitical tensions, as reactions continue to emerge from political, religious and international circles.
